Chapter 400 : Everybody Down on Wei Zhiqian
Tan Mo was stunned.
Could…could he really be that scary?
Upperclassman Cheng hurriedly waved his hand and explained himself, “Do I look like someone who would do that? I only secretly inquired about Tan Mo’s preferences so that. if we ever went out for a meal, I would know the type of food she likes. As for the rest, I would never try to poke my nose into her personal affairs.
“I do have a basic sense of boundaries.” Being misrepresented by Wei Zhiqian in such a vindictive manner infuriated upperclassman Cheng. “Mr. Wei, how could you misjudge me like that?
“I know that you don’t like me. In fact, I’m pretty sure you’re not fond of any guy who has feelings for Tan Mo. But to make up such baleful slander, isn’t that a little too petty of you? All these shabby tricks, spreading toxic rumors about others, what kind of gentleman does that make you? I’m so disappointed in you.”
Wei Zhiqian was speechless. He had never thought a day would come when he would be criticized so harshly.
“Of course I know you’re not that kind of person, upperclassman Cheng. You were only asking about the things I liked, which is perfectly fine.” Tan Mo smiled sweetly. “I appreciate your kind efforts.”
Since upperclassman Cheng had made his intentions clear, Tan Mo felt she needed to find an opportunity to turn him down.
However, with Wei Zhiqian and Wen Nuanxin—who she barely knew— still around, now did not seem like the appropriate time.
Tan Mo did not want to reject him in front of them and risk embarrassing him. She would have to wait until they finished eating to have a proper chat with him on their way back to school later.
Wen Nuanxin looked at Wei Zhiqian, and then she glanced at upperclassman Cheng.
Why did it feel like nothing had actually happened between them?
Could it be that Wei Zhiqian was just jealous because he did not know how to court a girl he liked?
So instead, what he did backfired and somehow angered the poor boy.
Although Wen Nuanxin was a therapist, she was no expert when it came to matters of the heart.
Who could possibly know what was going through the heads of those in love?
The bottom line was, they certainly were not behaving as they usually would.
Hearing Tan Mo’s kind words, upperclassman Cheng was overwhelmed with happiness. He could not hide the smile on his face. “Tan Mo, you…you should eat more.”
As he spoke, he took something from the plate of okra in front of him and another dish in front of Tan Mo and then placed them in her bowl.
Tan Mo kept quiet.
These were dishes she had ordered herself, so she had to eat them even through her disgust.
The genuine smile on Tan Mo’s face became a forced one. Tan Mo picked up the roasted okra and took a bite.
Even though the roasted okra had drier skin than blanched okra…
But the gooey texture within was still the same.
The moment it went in her mouth, the gooeyness felt unbearable to Tan Mo. It was extremely uncomfortable.
One glimpse of her expression, and Wei Zhiqian knew right away that Tan Mo was certainly not a fan of okra.
She had deliberately ordered it just to prove him wrong because she was mad at him.
Wei Zhiqian did not know what to do with her.
She could just stay mad at him, but why did she have to torture herself?
She could have ordered anything else. She did not have to order the one thing she hated most.
Wei Zhiqian shook his head with a smile. He was secretly brimming with adoration for her behind that smile.
He reached out his arm and swapped the roasted okra with the plate of black pepper fried clams that had been placed in front of him.
Which he knew was Tan Mo’s favorite.
Seeing the okra being taken away, Tan Mo breathed a sigh of relief.
In spite of that, she was still dispirited that he could tell she hated okra.
“Why did you take Tan Mo’s food?” exclaimed Wen Nuanxin, displeased with his actions.
It was bad enough that he was a love rival with his own niece, now he was picking a fight with her too?
Wei Zhiqian did not know what to say.
Tan Mo’s expression suddenly changed, and she said in a pitiful voice, “It’s okay, my uncle can have it if he likes it.”
Wei Zhiqian was stupefied.
She clearly hated it.
But now that she had made it sound like that, was he still supposed to eat it?
The okra was already in his mouth. He had not yet begun chewing, but Wei Zhiqian could not swallow it down now.
Wen Nuanxin felt sorry for the little girl. She was being bullied by her uncle, but she had to endure it.
“Let’s just ignore him.” Wen Nuanxin gave Wei Zhiqian the cold shoulder.
Wei Zhiqian was dumbfounded by the indignity of the situation.
His supposed blind date is now ignoring him?
Does she even know why she came here tonight?
“By the way, I forgot to ask, are you all still students?” Wen Nuanxin smiled. “I heard you calling him upperclassman Cheng and this young man here called Mr. Wei upperclassman as well. Are all of you from Beijing University?”
Tan Mo nodded. “Upperclassman Cheng is a postgraduate student in aerospace engineering at Beijing University, while I’m majoring in finance.”
“Wow, you’re all top achievers.” A thought suddenly came to Wen Nuanxin, “I thought your name sounded familiar!”
Seeing how friendly Wen Nuanxin was, upperclassman Cheng started talking more. “Tan Mo is now the pride of Beijing University. She was a 15-year-old when she got into Beijing University. She’s a student of both Professor Guo in the Department of Chinese Literature and Professor Zhao in the Department of History and, on top of that, she’s now joined our laboratory under Professor Yue. But these professors are mostly just famous among universities. She’s actually more known in society as the scriptwriter for ‘Legend of Wei and Jin’.”
“Oh, wow!” Wen Nuanxin clapped her hands together. “No wonder you sounded so familiar!”
The moment Wen Nuanxin heard all that, everything came rushing back to her.
It also dawned on her that Tan Mo and Wei Zhiqian were in fact unrelated by blood.
“Sister Nuan, are you here to have a blind date with my uncle?” After getting to know each other better, Tan Mo asked bluntly.
“I wouldn’t call it a blind date per se, we’re just here to meet up. If Mr. Wei finds me interesting, then we can become friends. If he doesn’t, then this will be the last time we meet.” Wen Nuanxin said nonchalantly with a sincere smile on her face.
Wei Zhiqian did not know how to respond to that.
Why did it feel like Wen Nuanxin’s attitude toward him was different now as compared to before?
Something did not quite feel right to Wei Zhiqian.
Taken by surprise, Tan Mo said, “Sister Nuan, you’re so liberal.”
At that moment, Tan Mo felt fond of Wen Nuanxin.
If they were a match, they could be together; if they were not, there would be no point in forcing it.
“I’m not. I’ve just learned to keep an open mind. If I didn’t, I’d be the one suffering, since I can’t do anything about Mr. Wei anyway.” Wen Nuanxin answered with a smile.
Tan Mo thought to herself, Wen Nuanxian is a smart woman.
After that, she had a very pleasant meal chatting with Wen Nuanxin.
They had almost finished the food on the table, but Qin Muye and Ming Yeqing were still nowhere in sight.
Wei Zhiqian wondered aloud, “Why haven’t Muye and Ming Yeqing arrived? Are they driving here from a neighboring city?”
It was obvious that these two had been conspiring to make a match between Tan Mo and Cheng Xiuze.
Tan Mo had run out of topics to talk about, so she quickly texted them.
As she was typing her message, before she could even press send, Ming Yeqing and Qin Muye suddenly came rushing in.
They saw Tan Mo and upperclassman Cheng sharing a table with Wei Zhiqian.
They seemed completely unruffled by the sight.
Wei Zhiqian shot them a stone-cold glare.
He’d seen right through their little scheme.
Qin Muye was not the least bit frightened.
She had her brother to back her up. Why would she need to feel scared?
As for Ming Yeqing, she would certainly have his back.
“Gosh, we’re really sorry. There was way too much traffic on the way here.” Qin Muye looked out of breath.
